Aut pugna aut morere – Either fight or die
92 Squadron was formed on 1 September 1917 and was sent to France where it operated on the Western Front, including the Somme offensive of 1918. Following the end of the First World War the Squadron was disbanded in 1919.
On 10 October 1939 the Squadron was reformed at Tangmere and equipped with Blenheims. These were replaced with Spitfires in early 1940. The Squadron flew patrols over Dunkirk during the evacuation of the BEF in May 1940. Following this the Squadron was rested for several months before returing to action in September at Biggin Hill where it was thrown into the midst of fierce fighting. Later in the war 92 Squadron served in Malta and Italy.
The Squadron served in Britain and Germany during the Cold War before changing to a training squadron in the 1990s. It was disbanded on 1 October 1994.

Dear Sir/Madam,
my name is Janice Jeffrey, one of my relatives was with 92 Squadron. His name was Douglas Patrick Learmond.Known as Pat. R.F.A. Fighter Pilot, 92f Squadron 33490,Pilot Officer, Spitfires. Pat was born in 1919 in Leith,Edinburgh.Sadly Pat was shot down on the 23rd of May 1940.
Age 20years.
Pats plane was found on the beach at Dunkerque by Peter Cazenove, who had just landed safely.Pats body was never found.
I have Geoffrey Wellums book First Light. There is a photo of Pat standing in front of his Spitfire.Witch is wonderful. There is more about Pat in,Robert Stanford Tucks book,Fly For Your Life.
I would love to get in touch with any body that new Pat Learmond.Geoffrey Wellum, Group Captain Allan Wright,or any body.I have been following everything about the 70th Anniversary about the battle of Britain. It is amazing. And i Salute them all.Hope to hear from anybody soon.

Continuing my delving into the mystery Spitfire crash mentioned by Wise62 I have established that the pilot was buried as an Unknown Airman of 39/45 War in Plot 14, Row E, Grave 22 of Terlincthun British Cemetery (Pas de Calais) on 28 July 1988.
The mystery endures, but notwithstanding the conflicting RR Merlin engine number I am inclined to the view that this is most likely Pat Learmond of 92 Squadron. All the evidence, circumstantial and otherwise, points in that direction.

Dear James, yes this is an amazing blog regarding 92F Squadron.I was researching my family tree. This is where i found out about Pat Learmond. There is a change to Pats name.Pats full name is Patrick Alexander George Learmond.not born in Leith ,Edinburgh but in Surrey. My mistake was Douglas Patick Learmond and Pat were first cousins, both born in the same year.Finding Pat has lead me to find so many more Learmonds. My cousin margaret Learmond ,has found a great niece of Pats, but we are still waiting to hear from her.I am hopeful for more info.My next move regarding Pat is,i will be getting in touch with the War Graves
Commission.regarding the information i now have on the grave in Pas de Calais.I hope they can confirm this is Pats grave. This would be wonderful.I can only hope.
There are so many books that you can read up on.regarding the R.A.F. I find mime in book shops in Ediburgh. There is a good one in Old Dalkeith Rd.
Good luck ,regards Janice.
